It’s mid-March, which means I’m afraid. The fear blows through me around this time every year. I dread that spring is on its way. But isn’t the thrill of spring’s arrival a feeling everyone shares? Yeah, for sure, totally, but for me also that thrill is unsettling, a bit dizzying, it’s like suddenly shifting into hyperdrive after a season spent gently idling.
As a musician winter has always been studio season. My whole creative life I’ve loved little more than an excuse to hole up with my machines and generate a private sonic world. As soon as winter breaks, the bright world outdoors calls me, and during the late winter/early spring transitional moment, my FOMO kicks in, the pressure to make the most of this glorious world starts to amp up, and I slightly dread the beautiful days ahead.
So here’s five tracks that sum up that spirit to me.
“White Desert at Cozy Cabin” was recorded as a live take in a remote cabin on New Year’s Eve in Terlingua, Texas, near the Mexican border. A snowstorm blew in during the day, knocking out the power. As dusk came on, the power came back on, and I sat down to play, watching snow fall over the wide desert. My wife and I had to wait an extra day for the foot of snow to thaw before we were able to leave.
“Stone for Stone” was inspired by Isamu Noguchi.
